Frederick C. Frederick Yeh spent his childhood witnessing sea turtles nesting on Hainan island's beaches, and then watched later as newborn sea turtles emerged to crawl into the sea.〔 After moving with his family to the United States, Yeh attended American public schools and graduated from Johns Hopkins University.〔〔〔 In 2007, Yeh returned to China for a visit and discovered that the endangered sea turtles no longer nested on Hainan island, and were instead sold illegally for their meat and shell.〔〔〔〔〔 Yeh then changed the course of his life to establish China's first non-governmental sea turtle conservation organization.〔〔〔
